Kudos for our clients in The Urban Developer Awards

Australia 29 April 2022

Clever design and engineering are clearly a winner, with three Cundall clients recognised in the 2022 Urban Developer Awards (TUD).

AMP Capital’s Marrickville Metro redevelopment designed by architects Hames Sharley won the Development of the Year – Retail award.

Cundall provided the building services design and sustainability consulting for the project, which expanded the 1980s shopping centre to incorporate a former Shelley’s Drinks warehouse and upgraded the adjacent public domain. The expansion created space for a new Coles supermarket, boutique retailers and a naturally-ventilated fresh food precinct with market-style artisan food providores, and new indoor and alfresco dining. Importantly, the redevelopment improved the retail centre’s energy efficiency and overall environmental performance.

“It is a very different development, very bespoke,” Marco Ettore, AMP Capital Head of Retail told TUD Awards host, Adam Di Marco.

Extensive community consultation was undertaken to understand how the expansion into the former warehouse would deliver a centre that met the expectations of the area’s vibrant, multicultural community, Ettore explained.

Cundall’s building services design strategy incorporated extensive thermal comfort studies and energy modelling to inform a robust, highly-efficient building services design that maximises passive ventilation, natural daylighting and a smart heating, ventilation and cooling system that is highly energy-efficient. The new car park area has been shaded with solar PV that supplies electricity for the centre, further reducing emissions and energy requirements.

“AMP Capital cared about the sustainability credentials, and so do the people Marrickville Metro serves. By prioritising the environmental dimension, it improves the customer experience and creates a clear point of difference for the centre,” Mohammad Ali, Cundall Director and Project Lead said.

Two other Cundall projects also garnered acclaim, with GPT’s commercial tower, 32 Smith Street in Parramatta, achieving Finalist in the Development of the Year – Commercial category. Cundall provided sustainability consulting for the project, which has recently attained 6 Star Green Star certification from the Green Building Council of Australia.

Cundall also provided sustainability consulting for Centuria Industrial REIT's 5 Star Green Star Industrial Facility, which attained Finalist in the Development of the Year – Industrial category. The facility in Bundamba, Queensland was one of the first industrial properties in Australia to achieve a 5-Star Green Star rating.
