Success at regional BCO awards

22 October 2020

Three of Cundall’s projects collected awards at regional British Council for Offices (BCO) Awards 2020. During BCO’s festival week of virtual awards, Brunel Building, Riverside House and The Beam have all been celebrated.

Early in the week at the BCO London Awards 2020, Brunel Building was awarded commercial workplace winner. The development offers people focused workplace with access to the canal and underground tube lines. Cundall started working with Derwent London on the site in 2004 until project completion in 2019. Judges particularly praised the solar shading incorporated in the external structure, which provides passive energy saving and addresses environmental concerns held by occupiers.

Peter Stocks, Project Partner for Brunel Building commented ‘We are incredibly proud to see Brunel Building win the commercial workplace award at the regional BCO Awards this year. Cundall has been working with Derwent on the site for nearly 15 years and the building is an incredible landmark for Paddington which challenges the existing building stock in the area. Congratulations to the team involved.’

Riverside House was celebrated at the BCO Northern Awards in the fit-out of workplace category. The judges appreciated the flexible and adaptable office space which enables agility and collaboration. Riverside House offers a remodelled and extended building in the New Bailey regeneration zone where Cundall’s acoustics team were able to provide design advice without compromising the clients aesthetic vision.

Rob Turner, Head of Acoustics for Riverside House commented 'It was fantastic to see Riverside House collect the Fit Out of Workplace Award at the BCO Northern Awards. Having worked with Muse for a number of years it was great to be involved in their move to the heart of their New Bailey regeneration development. The quality of the space is testament to the vision of the client, the expertise of their design team and Overbury’s attention to detail throughout the construction period. We look forward to celebrating the award with the team as soon as we are able to!'

The Beam followed suit being awarded commercial workplace at the BCO Northern Awards. The development, part of the wider Vaux regeneration was celebrated by the judges who called the building a ‘brave and impactful project that has reset expectations and aspirations for the city.’ Cundall’s planning and multi-disciplinary engineering team have worked on the Vaux development since the bidding stage in 2014, and is Sunderland’s largest ever regeneration project. The Beam is the first office building to be developed on the site and provides 60,000sqm of outstanding office space in the heart of Sunderland City Centre.

Gary Marshall, Project Partner said “It was a successful night for us at the BCO Northern Awards and we are all thrilled that both of these projects won. We have been working on the Vaux site for years so to have the first project complete, occupied and now recognised at such prestigious awards is an honour. We continue to work on the Vaux site, with the next project due to complete in 2021 and we are excited to see the impact this regeneration scheme has for Sunderland. Congratulations to all involved.

The BCO Awards are widely respected within the commercial property sector. They display the strength of British office design and illustrate a combination of excellence from the clarity of purpose in the brief; ingenuity of product; clever design solutions where appropriate; and delivery on time and in budget. The regional winners will go up against each other in the BCO national awards final taking place in January 2021.
