Ed Wealend

I joined Cundall in 2010 after starting out as a mechanical engineer. My role has evolved through building physics and energy, air quality and sensors, and through working on innovative projects, more into research and development. I’m now chair of CIBSE’s Air Quality group and sit on their Knowledge Generation Panel, where I help formulate industry guidance. In my spare time, I’m engineering director of a charity restoring a Victorian funicular railway.

My role is mostly about encouraging creativity in others, and helping them find the time and space in a busy practice to go beyond what our clients expect in the drive towards net zero. Thankfully, I’m surrounded by many talented young engineers, and their enthusiasm for sustainability makes my job much easier.

Engineers don’t operate in a silo, and we don’t have all the answers. My best projects have been those where the design team are all pulling in the same direction, and everyone’s listening to each other. This is especially relevant now as targets get tougher, and every part of every project needs to perform.
