The route into my building services career was not traditional. Since entering the industry as a trainee engineer, I have progressed through all engineering levels and had the opportunity to work on some of the world’s most iconic projects. I really enjoy the collaborative and problem-solving nature of engineering, plus I believe that building services engineers are at the forefront of the sustainability challenges our planet faces. Throughout my career my education has also been non-traditional. Completing my studies whilst working gave me unique opportunities to apply the new knowledge gained from education directly into my design work.
Collaboration
I believe that collaboration between all stakeholders on projects is one of the main keys to success. Only if all parties are pulling in the same direction can a project be truly successful. Throughout my career I have learned that the key to collaboration is being able to understand all stakeholders’ drivers, then working to try to satisfy each.
Creativity
During the modern digital age which we find ourselves in, there has never been more opportunity for creativity in design and construction. I believe that we are on the verge of a major shift in the way that building systems are designed, and with this automation in design comes the ability to analyse technical solutions to a level which was not possible in previous years. This allows designers the freedom to propose creative solutions which can be optimised for energy efficiency and sustainability.
