Regeneration of the former NHS Newcastle General Hospital site, spanning over 117,000m2. The new site will provide world-leading research on dementia and frailty as well as offering housing for the elderly. The 10-year masterplan will demolish most of the old hospital buildings and prioritise pedestrian and cycle routes along with green corridors.
We have been working alongside Newcastle University, Kajima and Genr8 to determine the infrastructure development plan in line with the primary objectives of the scheme. The masterplan will provide unique solutions for living, leisure, learning and employment as people age with a focus on health, wealth and wellbeing. We are working on the outline masterplan for the site to ensure it integrates with the surrounding communities and infrastructure.
Gordon Reid commented "This is a hugely important project for the North East region. It will provide leading research and innovation into the UK’s challenge of an ageing population. We have been working alongside the design team to create a low carbon strategy for the campus, considering the operational and embodied energy of the solutions we choose."
The development is targeting net zero carbon in construction and operation and will have a huge impact on the community.
