The two multi-residential buildings of the Liv development were designed and delivered in alignment with the One Planet Living sustainability framework. In addition to 166 apartments and approximately 1,300sqm of commercial space, the development incorporates edible gardens, a BBQ area, bicycle facilities and 100% renewable energy supplied throughout.
Cundall extended the application of sustainability in the residential context through applying One Planet Living principles and benchmarks to energy, water, waste, community, localism, transport and wellbeing. Initiatives included excellent passive design, best practice thermal and acoustic insulation, double glazing throughout, LED lighting, energy-efficient appliances and re-use of demolition materials including railway sleepers and bricks in the new development.
"One Planet Living is a framework based on ten principles for living within the finite resources of our earth. It covers areas such as carbon, waste, transport, food and water. A wonderful aspect of this project was a Blue Sky Thinking Workshop held with stakeholders during the design phase, which generated some outstanding ideas for the final development." Oliver Grimaldi, Associate.
One Planet Living is challenging to achieve, but it also provides unique possibilities for an innovative design-led approach.
