The phased redevelopment of Intu Eldon Square has transformed this major shopping centre from a dated 1970s development to new and vibrant malls. Cundall have provided multi-disciplinary services to the project since its inception in 2004. This started with the initial redevelopment of St. Andrew’s Way, reinvention of the bus station, the construction of Grey's Quarter and the full mall refurbishment including the creation of the iconic Northumberland Street entrance.
At Grey's Quarter, we created 20 restaurant units in the live building, with a sitting tenant on the floor above. We worked with the complex level changes to create a cohesive solution including service yard reconfiguration and roof top extensions. One of the units was a 17-sided shape and had five different slab levels.
The iconic Northumberland Street entrance removed the first floor to create a double height entrance mall. To further enhance the space, the roof was partially cut back, and a dramatic fluorine-based plastic (ETFE) cantilever canopy structure was added, which oversails the entrance and creates a triple height entrance. This was a particular challenge while keeping the mall open.
The mall refurbishment included dramatic new feature roof lights to transform and update the mall spaces.
