Cundall was appointed with architects WilkinsonEyre to design a landmark road bridge to meet the needs of Jinhua City’s growing economy and population. Several design schemes were presented to the client and city authorities, who chose to proceed with a 350m long cable stayed bridge with maximum 175m span, featuring an elegant 60m tall central V-shaped pylon. This design picks up a 50m wide steel box girder deck via inclined stay cables.
We developed numbers of schemes through a parametric approach to achieve a balanced design both structurally efficient and aesthetically appealing within tight programme. For the scheme chosen by the client, further detailed study was carried out to optimise the cable pre-stress in conjunction with pylon and deck size while meeting the essential structural performance and aesthetic criteria.
"Using parametric approach to support our design approach enabled rapid response to design changes and optimisation of the outcome through exploration of a large pool of solutions. The final structural design incorporates prestressed cables, so there is a complex interplay of forces at work. The Jinhua Hepan bridge takes this complexity one step further due to its featured slender and split pylon." Dong Chen, Director.
Any cable-stayed bridge demands a delicate balance of the interlaced relationship of geometry and forces.
