Cundall has been appointed to provide all areas of engineering expertise to assist with the delivery of the new Kingston Leisure and Community Building, one of the largest and most significant leisure facilities planned for development in the UK.
The state-of-the-art building will deliver every form of leisure and community facility and is to include, among others, a 25m pool designed for short course competitive swimming, including a ‘floating floor’; a teaching pool for swimming lessons and family fun; a six-court sports hall for teams sports like basketball, netball, badminton; four squash courts; an open rooftop space for activities like yoga and pilates; rooftop five-a-side football pitches; a gym and exercise studios; a climbing wall in the entrance and an enhanced outdoor playground.
A true community space, meeting a wide range of local needs.
The size of the building and the diversity of spaces it will provide - in various stacked arrangements - is requiring Cundall’s numerous areas of expertise to come to the fore to overcome challenges:
- Dynamics effects on very long-span structure over the large volume spaces of the sports hall, swimming pool, teaching pool and studios;
- Sound, acoustics and vibration of the uses both within spaces and across interfaces of these;
- Environmental conditions needed in the wide variety of spaces and uses to achieve the right blend of temperature, humidity, air or cooling;
- Pool water filtration;
- Fire engineering to ensure safety and safe means of escape; and
- A sustainable building and development enabling it to be the best in its class.
Leader of Kingston Council and Portfolio Holder for Finance, Councillor Andreas Kirsch said:
“….We are working with leading architects FaulknerBrowns to deliver a truly inclusive space, accessible for all, environmentally sustainable, and family and disabled friendly. It will also celebrate our borough’s rich heritage and history. The new complex will help revitalise our town centre, making it a prime place to visit for culture, entertainment and leisure as well as shopping.”
This is one of the most challenging projects Cundall is delivering across all the disciplines we offer, and we are extremely excited in doing so to help shape the future wellbeing of the community of Kingston upon Thames.
