UniSA's Cancer Research Institute in Adelaide's Health and Biomedical Precinct is a technically complex facility that achieved LEED Gold certification. The $247m building comprises 12 levels and includes state-of-the-art facilities for the Centre for Cancer Biology, School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, the Science Creativity Education Studio, the Innovation and Collaboration Centre, and a public museum.
As LEED consultant on the project, we coordinated the relevant disciplines to deliver a sustainable site strategy, embed water-efficiency and energy-efficiency initiatives, and ensure an exceptional indoor environment quality with high thermal comfort and abundant natural light. Cundall also addressed materiality including the specification of low VOC materials and finishes, maximising use of local procurement and reducing construction waste to landfill.
"The UniSA Cancer Research Institute built on our success with SAHMRI in achieving a world-leading LEED Gold certification. This building acts as a gateway to the precinct, which required a focus on user experience. The project included a new urban park utilising water-sensitive urban design principles and end of trip facilities for cyclists." Lewis Hewton, Principal Consultant.
Achieving a LEED rating requires holistic thinking, considering the whole building life cycle and the experience of occupants.
